Choosing a colour: Black and Orange are for real use. Blue is the training tourniquet.
All three are the same Gen 7 C-A-T, built to the same standard. The colour is what tells you the job it's meant for. A tourniquet cranked down on a real casualty has done its work and should not go back in the bag — and every practice rep you take on a Black or Orange unit quietly wears down the one you're counting on for a massive bleed. The Blue C-A-T exists so you can drill: apply it, tighten it, release it, and do it again hundreds of times without touching your duty tourniquet. Train on Blue. Carry Black or Orange.
Noted as the best prehospital tourniquet in the February 2008 supplement of The Journal of Trauma, the patented C-A-T® is a true one-handed tourniquet proven 100% effective by the U.S. Army's Institute of Surgical Research. Testing showed the C-A-T completely occluded blood flow of an extremity in the event of a traumatic wound with significant hemorrhage.
The Generation 7 C-A-T uses a durable windlass system with a patented free-moving internal band that delivers true circumferential pressure to the extremity. Once adequately tightened, bleeding stops and the windlass locks into place. A hook-and-loop windlass retention strap then secures the windlass to maintain pressure through casualty evacuation. The patented Combat Application Tourniquet® features the proprietary red tip design and the mechanical advantage of a band within a band.
